F4A42 - automatic four-speed transmission developed by Mitsubishi for front-wheel drive vehicles with engine volume from 1.6 to 2.8 liters. In the Mitsubishi lineup this type of automatic was installed on Lancer, Grandis, Oulander, Galant . Other automakers also used F4A42 in their designs. For example, Kia Motors Corporation installed them on Carens, Cerato, Sportage, and Hyundai - Santa Fe, Sonata and Tucson.

With the time and usage of the automatic transmission, in addition to routine maintenance of oil and filter replacement, more complex maintenance operations may be required. One of the types of malfunctions of Japanese automatic machines "with mileage" is the wearout of channels of hydraulic accumulators. There are problems with switching to the second and third gears, observed mainly on the "hot" box. At attempt of switching there is a thump and tough switching, overdrive pack work is broken - needle bearings and gears are broken.

Hydraulic battery -is the unit responsible for maintaining the required level of oil pressure in the box in case of sudden change in operating mode. Constructively, the battery consists of a cylindrical channel in the body of an automatic transmission inside which a spring-loaded plastic piston moves. The force of the spring corresponds to the normal level of the oil pressure, when the oil pressure increases, the piston compresses the spring and enters the cylindrical channel, and a pressure reserve occurs. If the operating mode of the automatic transmission changes abruptly, the oil pressure may decrease, in this case the piston leaves the channel and compensates losses.

Over time and use, the transmission oil is littered with products of fracture of friction clutches and other mechanical inclusions, which leads to abrasion of the walls of the accumulator channels. Regular replacement of oil and filters only suspends the wear process, but after a while, already "new" oil collects abrasives and the process is resumed.

At a certain level of destruction of the walls of the channel, there is a loss of tightness, i.e. The accumulator can no longer store the pressure, although the piston remains in working order and even the seal looks like new. The destruction of the walls of the channel is not compensated by the rubber ring of the sealant and is the cause of a free flow of oil.

The lack of pressure compensation is the main reason for the thumps when switching to the second and third gears. To solve the problem, the specialists of the company Maktrans offer repair of the accumulator channel with the use of author's technology. The failed accumulator channel is replaced with a new one - in the form of a steel bushing. The dimensions of the new channel correspond to the automatic transmission without mileage and actually repeat the dimensions of the channel of the new car. The channel bushing is made of a steel alloy and guarantees a level of compression that meets the manufacturer's requirements. At the final stage of the repair, a preliminary boring of the defective channel is carried out to the size of the outer diameter of the bush, then the bushing itself is pressed in.

All lathe work is performed on CNC machines, which provides a level of accuracy corresponding to the original parts. The installation of the bushing returns the normal gear shifting mode by compensating the pressure loss of the hydraulic fluid, thumps disappear. At the end of the repair, the transmission is tested on the diagnostic map and then on the test drive.
