Friction plates are  elements of the automatic transmission that engage the clutch and transmit the engine torque. The friction plate consists of a steel disc and a friction layer glued on it.

Types of friction plates:

-Two-sided, friction lining is glued on both sides of the friction plate. They have an internal tooth and are used in combination steel plate-friction plate.

-One-sided, on one side smooth steel surface, on the other side friction lining.

Can have both an internal tooth (usually labeled as BI Internal) or an external tooth (usually labeled BE external).

This type of plate works in pairs.

Friction linings are selected depending on the features of the automatic transmission and the history of their repairs.

Friction linings:

-Beige friction linings are mostly made of cellulose and are used in packs that work on abrasion, such layer  conveys the engine torque better.

-TGrez friction linings, are used in packs that are more often exposed to high temperatures and burn.

-Grey-green friction linings is mainly made of graphite or Kevlar fiber, such plates have better sliding properties and resistance to overheating.

Characteristics of friction linings:

- Thermal conductivity (ability to absorb oil and pass heat energy)

-Temperature resistance (withstand one-time heating up to 300-400 degrees without changing the properties)

-Stability (the ability to maintain its quality in the wear and use of poor-quality gear oil throughout its life)

- Frictional static qualities, (high "slip threshold", ability to transfer high torque to slip into slip).

- Frictional dynamic qualities, (the ability to transmit the torque at "modulated slippage." The analogy of an adjustable braking with the brake pedal).

-Measistance, mechanical strength.

Friction linings can be:

-Segmented, the patch is seamed to the glue layer. This kind of lining absorbs the friction force best and has a low tendency to adhesion (the interacting elements do not wedge).

-Monolithic, the cover completely covers the friction, thereby increasing the working surface of the plate, which ensures a car's smooth moving off .

-Monolithic with notches, used in packs with the greatest load, notches reduce the working area of the friction plate, at the same time performing the function of the  oil pump gear, which increases the speed of passage of oil through the channel and helps to cool the surface. As the depth of the incision is reduced, the oil flow rate decreases, which can lead to accelerated combustion of the clutches.

Friction glue:

It is an adhesive lacquer coating that consists of resins with a pouring point of not less than 180-200º. The friction lining is pasted onto the steel surface by pressing in high frequency currents.

This adhesive backing is the main cause of valve body and solenoids wear.

The main causes of friction plates wear:

-ATF (transmission oil) lose its properties (approximately with the mileagef 50,000-60,000 km).

- Insufficient level of transmission oil.

-Pressure drop of transmission oil (friction plates start to slip, the force of compression of packs becomes insufficient).

-Water or antifreeze leak into the automatic transmission.
