We got a torque converter with a 3 liter diesel BMW X5. The box is called ZF 6HP26, it is a fairly modern 6-speed automatic transmission manufactured by ZF for rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, and has been installed on many cars (mainly BMW, Audi, Land Rover, Jaguar)

.ZF 6HP26 is designed to work with powerful engines up to 6 liters, which means it can absorb huge torque up to 600 Nm - the torque converter must also correspond and be structurally reliable.

ZF was one of the first companies to use a friction plate in the design of its torque converters, rather than a locking piston with an attached friction lining, firstly this solution is more reliable, and secondly, it allows  blocking torque converter in the slip mode, which increases the transmission efficiency.

Before proceeding with the repair, consider pricing. The basic cost of repairs (includes cutting on a turning,lathe, troubleshooting, replacement of consumables and welding) is $ 100. Additionally, consumables are considered, so a typical repair costs $ 100-150. If this is not the first time you are repairing a torque converter in  Maktrans company, the repair cost is only $ 59 + the cost of consumables.

Wearout from the  friction plate work is noticable - so we process the surface with a cutter.

Lock up piston is also installed in the chuck and the surface is polished.

 

Next, the cut torque converter is degreased with solvent and sent to the sink

 

The friction plate became “glassy” and lost its properties.

 

Replacing consumables

 

New friction plate is taken

 

The rubber seal is replaced with a new one.

 

We install a new friction plate, then a piston, fix it in the conductor and weld

 

Oil seal is replaced

 

We return to the lathe and remove the excess of welding seam

 

Now we have a difficult and crucial moment, using a torque wrench and an adapter made of the input shaft, we need to adjust the tension of the torque converter lock-up piston. If this is not done, the clutch will not lock or unlock.

 

We continue assembly. The freewheel in the turbine wheel is rotated in both directions, we take it out and see that it has crumbled. We replace it with the new one.

 

We assemble to the end and  can proceed to welding. We use an automatic welding complex.

 

Checking the neck of the torque converter for a runout. it needs to enter a tolerance of 0.2 mm

 

Now check for leaks, the torque converter is immersed in water and air is pumped in through the adapter. If the welding seam is not tight (can etch on tacks) - we  must weld these places.

 

The welded torque converter is obligatory washed in 3 washing machines. The first 2 washing machines wash  with a mixture of air and diesel fuel under pressure.

 

The third washing machine wash  with gear oil. Thus, after washing in 3 devices, the presence of dirt or chips inside the torque converter is excluded.

 

Repair is completed, torque converter is sealed in foil and ready to be sent to the client

 

 

 

The repair shown in the article is relevant for any torque converter, there may be a difference in only some design differences. There are torque converters with friction plates  (as in this case),and there are  those with friction lining on the piston. If the second option - a new piston lining is glued, otherwise everything looks the same. Repairing a torque converter at Maktrans is a more preferable option than buying a used torque converter and much  cheaper than buying a new one, while the quality and reliability of the regenerated torque converter are no different from the new one.
