Consider the main reasons for the failure of the VAG 0AW VL381 [CVT] transmission.
     The heart of all problems is the hydraulic control unit, it controls the operation of the entire transmission. The reason for this is metal fine chips, which are inevitably formed during the operation of the transmission.
     Chips get into the oil with oil in the hydraulic system and valve body, bypassing the regular factory filter. By its design, a regular filter is physically unable to stop the smallest particles ~ 25-30 microns in size, such small chips (dust) easily pass through the filter element of a standard filter.
Once in the oil system and with it in the valve body, these smallest particles enter the working gaps between the body of the valve body and the pressure regulating valves and act as an abrasive that begins to slowly "cut" the body of the valve body and valves, which will inevitably lead first to a pressure leak which in turn, to incorrect operation of the cones, after which to sticking, inevitable jamming and failure of the transmission.

     What are the reasons for the formation of this malignant fine chips?
         1. The work of the belt on the pulleys inevitably forms the smallest particles.
2. The work of the planetary gear and helical gears in the process of irreversible wear forms the smallest particles, wear products.
         3. Wear products of the friction layer of the clutch discs. Most of the wear products of the clutch discs are stopped by a standard filter, except for the smallest dust, which tends to accumulate over time in the form of deposits in the "farthest" channels of the valve body. Usually does not pose a danger to the components of the valve body, except in certain critical cases.
          4. Development of the nest of the cage of the rear bearing of the driven pulley. The reason is usually aggressive driving, which is accompanied by increased loads on the transmission units.
Also, the cause may be dirty oil, which disables the bearing, causing it to jam and rotate the cage in the transmission housing. It is the rotation of the outer race of the bearing that leads to the formation of fine aluminum powder (dust), which most often "eats" the components and the valve body from the inside.

After repairing the case and replacing all the necessary components, replacing filters, oil, the chips that were in the system before the repair will not disappear anywhere, but it will become smaller, since some part will be washed during the repair process, but it is not possible to wash it completely because of its microscopic in size, it still remains on the walls of the transmission housing.

This filter system connects to the stock external transmission cooling circuit without requiring any modifications to the standard design.
