Hydra-Matic (6T30 6T40 6T45 6T50) — a series of six-speed automatic boxes manufactured by General Motors. These automatic transmissions in our market can most often be found on the Chevrolet Captiva, Cruze, Aveo, Malibu, Lacetti. Various modifications of the boxes of this series are designed to work with different motors with a volume from 1.4 to 3.2 liters, respectively, and are designed to take into account different input torque. Sooner or later, the owner of the car with the box 6T30 / 6T40 is faced with the unsatisfactory work of the transmission, there are thumps when switching or slipping. The reason, as a rule, lies in the valvebody (hydraulic transmission control unit) - either wearout in the hydraulic part, or problems with solenoid valves - solenoids.

We have learned how to reliably restore the  6T30 / 6T40 solenoids and even extend their resource, now we will show how this happens.

First check the solenoid on the stand to determine the performance. The repairman evaluates the schedule and decides about the need for repair.

The fault of these solenoids can be determined visually, without testing on the stand. In the spout of the solenoid there is a plastic element that fixes the plunger guide, if it breaks and closes the channels, this solenoid stops working. So look at the photo below, on the left is a normal solenoid, on the right - with a broken retainer.

Disassembling

We can see the same damaged plastic retainer

Next, the solenoid is cleaned of dirt, special attention is paid to neodymium magnets, there are 2 of them - one in the tip of the solenoid, the other in the coil. Along the way, we examine the details of the presence of wearout. In the photo below - the plunger (photo number 1) and its guide (photo number 2),  visible wearout can be observed. When assembling, we just turn  it over(photo number 3).

Assembly. Installing the plunger guide and retainer

Now we will open the secret of a successful repair. In the photo below - our development, it is an aluminum support sleeve with holes all over the diameter. We install it over the plastic retainer, then install the magnet.

You can buy this bushing:

Installing plunger

This is how the tip of the solenoid assembly with the newly installed support sleeve looks like

We finish the assembly of the solenoid and check on the stand, the test result is perfect. Such a solenoid will work as the new original one and, moreover, we have eliminated a serious structural flaw - the plastic retainer no longer plays any role. Regeneration of one solenoid costs only 40$.
