The drum is required to transfer rotation from 4th to 6th gear. The rotation is transmitted through the sun gear of the 6T40 center planetary gear. 6T40 rear planetary sun gear rotation for reverse, third and fifth gears.
Reasons for replacement are in the 3-5-Reverse pack. In it, either a retaining ring flies out or a spacer washer breaks into pieces.
