The piston is driven by oil pressure. Moving under oil pressure, the piston by means of the conical plate presses firmly the friction plates to the steel plates by forcing them to rotate as a unit and carrying the torque from the drum to the hub. As soon as the oil pressure falls, the piston moves back under the influence of a return spring, friction plates and steel plates disengage and torque through the pack is no longer transmitted.
