Adapter sleeves for fastening the tool with a taper shank are used to install a tool with a conical shank into the spindle of the machine tool, which has a hole of a larger size than the tool shank.

On the lathe, the adapter sleeve is used to place the tool in the tailstock, the fixed center in the front headstock.
