The fluid temperature sensor is part of the internal wiring of the automatic transmission,in fact it is a thermistor. The control unit supplies 5 volts to the sensor and measures the voltage drops in the circuit. When the transmission fluid is cold, the resistance is high and the control unit registers high voltage. When the liquid is heated to normal operating temperature, the resistance decreases and consequently the voltage decreases. The ECU uses this information to ensure clear switching and the timely activation of the blocking of the GDT over the entire operating temperature range. If the unit receives incorrect values from the sensor, it will write down errors P0710 or P0711 (TCM-0045)
