The standard heat exchanger has 9 layers. The enlarged one has 12 layers. The increase of the heat exchanger by 3 layers provides better ATF cooling and thus minimizes the chance of transmission overheating.

Over the time and use heat exchanger is clogged with resinous dirt and reduces its performance below an acceptable threshold. Cracks in the walls of the heat exchanger lead to antifreeze penetration into automatic transmission.
