The main reason for replacing an E Clutch drum is wear on the splined part of the neck.
ZF transmissions use an E Clutch drum and a #3 planetary sun gear with 38 and 48 splines. All other physical parameters - height, diameters, number of gear teeth, etc., are the same for both clutch drums and sun gears.
In fact, the difference in the number of splines only complicates the selection of spare parts that fit together, provided that one part is replaced, for successful installation it is important to maintain the number of splines on both parts.
When replacing the assembly (sun gear + E Clucth drum), the number of splines on the initially installed parts is not of fundamental importance, since the splines serve only to rigidly connect the parts to each other to transmit torque to the helical gears of the planetary gears, which determine the gear ratio of the transmission.
