One of the most common problems in Ford 4R70W, 4R75E, 4R75W (AOD, AODE, AODE-W) transmissions is the appearance of cracks in the area of the retaining ring groove on the front drum. The manufacturing technology of this groove in original parts (OEM) leads to the formation of high-stress zones around the perimeter of the drum. The drum is actively used in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears and is especially susceptible to loads during abrupt switching from 4th to 3rd gear, when re-engagement occurs at increased pressure.
The combination of pressure generated by the front clutch piston and high stress in the groove area causes cracks to form and eventually to the destruction of the upper part of the drum. The degree of damage can vary from complete failure of the FORWARD clutch pack to slippage in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear.
The solution to this problem is to use a one-piece forged front clutch drum, which, due to its one-piece construction, strengthens the weak points of the structure.
Advantages of the upgraded drum:
- The increased groove depth provides a more secure fit of the retaining ring.
- The forged one-piece construction provides significantly greater strength and durability than the original stamped drum.
This upgrade significantly reduces the risk of cracks and increases the service life of the part.
