The shift solenoid operates as a pilot valve. A small steel ball is moved by an electromagnetic plunger to block or open an orifice, which in turn controls the high-pressure hydraulic fluid that moves the shift forks.
When the plastic seat fails, the TCU (Transmission Control Unit) can no longer precisely manage the shift fork position. You will typically see:
- Gear Disengagement: If the solenoid cannot hold pressure due to a leaking seat, the transmission may "drop" a gear or skip even/odd sets.
- Fault Codes: Common codes include P284A (Shift Fork Stuck) or pressure sensor correlation codes, as the actual pressure doesn't match the commanded pressure.
