The Repair Process (Standard Overhaul)
A professional repair usually involves a "Repair Kit" approach rather than replacing the entire $3,000+ unit.
A. Electronic Circuit Foil Replacement
The most frequent fix involves replacing the internal wiring harnesses (printed circuit foils). These connect the main TCU (Transmission Control Unit) to the various solenoids and sensors. Over time, these foils crack or short-circuit due to heat.
B. Solenoid Valve Replacement
The kit typically includes several critical solenoids:
- VBS (Variable Bleed Solenoids): These control the cooling oil flow and main pressure.
- Clutch Valves: Responsible for the smooth engagement of the K1 and K2 clutches.
Replacing these restores the correct hydraulic pressure curves required for smooth shifting.
C. Inspection of the Valve Body
The mechanical aluminum housing must be checked for:
- Scoring: Scratches in the valve bores that lead to pressure loss.
- Debris: Metallic shavings from clutch wear that can clog the fine mesh filters.
Post-Repair On-Road Testing and Dynamic Adaptation
After reinstalling the mechatronic unit, filling it with new fluid, and performing the initial static calibrations (shift fork and clutch end points), a rigorous on-road test is mandatory.
This dynamic adaptation allows the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) to learn the new hydraulic pressure curves and clutch "kiss points" under actual load.
