The U660E transmission, manufactured by Toyota, is widely used in various models of Toyota and Lexus vehicles.
Despite its reliability, it can experience some common failures and problems. One common failure is wear of the front planetary gear housing where the thrust needle bearing is installed.


Reasons for the problem:

  • Aggressive driving style, abrupt starts, wheel spin.
  • Quality and condition of ATF transmission fluid.

As is well known, the longevity of a transmission directly depends on the quality of the transmission fluid and the regularity of routine maintenance, such as changing filters and oil every 40,000 km.
Under normal conditions, ATF prevents direct metal-to-metal friction, keeping components in good condition.
Failure to comply with routine maintenance results in the accumulation and mixing of transmission component wear products, such as friction dust and fine shavings, with the ATF, which inevitably form during operation.
Wear products destroy the oil film that forms on all working surfaces, and abrasive particles begin to saw through transmission components as a result of metal-to-metal friction.

The abrasive wears down and deepens the bearing seat, causing the bearing to lose its rigid support. Over time, further damage to the housing results in axial play, which can lead to more serious transmission failures.
